Palm Beach County Public Defender’s Office, 15th Judicial Circuit


The Palm Beach County Public Defender's Office, 15th Judicial Circuit, is a client-centered, dynamic advocacy office providing representation to people whose lives and liberty are at stake.

The office handles close to 30,000 cases per year and has approximately 200 employees including lawyers, investigators, social workers, and support staff. The main office, housing the trial and appellate divisions, is in downtown West Palm Beach and there are four branch offices in other areas of the county.

Divisions include: County Court; Felony; Mental Health; Major Crimes; Youth Defense; Appeals; and Investigative & Social Services’ Units.


We are currently recruiting certified paralegal candidates to support attorneys, investigators, social services, and mental health professionals working to provide indigent criminal defense for our clients.

Paralegals work independently and as a team to provide legal defense to our clients. Knowledge and skills include: knowledge of legal terminology, substantive law, and legal procedures; ability to conduct fact-finding interviews; ability to research legal documents and legal references; and ability to perform legal writing, communicate effectively, and plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

Types of Work Performed:
  • Analyzes, selects, compiles, and summarizes information on statutes, legal decisions, opinions, rulings, memoranda, or other legal materials for internal use
  • Examines legal instruments or other documents to assure completeness of information and conformance to pertinent laws, rules, regulations, precedents, or office requirements
  • Interviews and takes sworn affidavits from citizens or police officers and recommends possible course of action to superiors
  • Communicates in a professional/business email and letter format
  • Proofreading
  • Assists in case preparation
  • Assists in selecting, assembling, and summarizing legal instruments and specific legal subjects
  • Conducts legal research as directed
  • Accomplishes department and organization mission by completing related tasks
  • Other tasks as directed.

Training & Experience:
Graduation from either an accredited college legal assistant or paralegal course or graduation from high school (or with a GED) with progressive legal assistant experience and responsibilities.
